Music & Traditions
when i think about music and tradition the first thing that pops in my head honestly isn’t anything super deep it’s cookouts. like real family cookouts where the food smells crazy good, somebody’s uncle is dancing with a drink in hand, and there’s always that one speaker playing the same songs every time
you already know what i’m talking about "to the right to the right to the left to the left” the cupid shuffle comes on and suddenly everybody turns into backup dancers. and then boom “watch me two step” and people forget they were mid-plate just to hop in the circle and vibe. it’s funny but it’s also low key one of those unspoken traditions in my family and honestly probably in a lot of other people’s too
that kind of music just makes people move. no one cares how good they are at dancing or how old they are. it’s just about having fun and being together. it’s tradition without even trying to be
but on the flip side lately i’ve found myself getting into way more chill and emotional music. stuff like Clara La San, Sonder, Drake’s slower tracks, Brent Faiyaz music that kinda lets you zone out or actually feel what you’re going through. i think it's become my own little personal tradition when life gets overwhelming or i’m stressed or even just gaming at night, that music helps me breathe. like it really does feel like therapy sometimes
one song i keep running back to is Clara la san’s in this darkness. i don’t even know how to explain it but the vibe is just calm but also kinda sad and deep at the same time. perfect for when you’re just in your own head for a bit
Then there’s moments like my cousin’s wedding where music really hit different. they played best part by Daniel caesar & h.e.r. for their first dance and you could just feel the whole room go quiet and soft. like everyone felt that song whether they were in love or not. that’s when i really realized how much music adds to a moment music is kinda always there. at the parties, the quiet nights, the deep convos, the hype moments. it’s a big part of tradition both the ones we grow up with and the ones we make for ourselves. and i think that’s what makes it so dope.
I was intrigued reading about your musical experiences and how certain songs are tied to family events and personal moments. My experience was similar in that music also played a big role in family gatherings we had songs that everyone expected to hear at cookouts or holidays, just like you mentioned. However, the style of music at my family events was a bit different, leaning more toward old school R&B and gospel rather than newer hits. Still, I agree with you that no matter the genre, music has a powerful way of bringing people together and making those moments memorable.
ReplyDeleteHonestly it was so fun seeing the Cupid Shuffle! I still kind of remember when it came out lol. I also enjoyed listening to Clara la San's In this Darkness. Also Daniel Ceasar is an amazing artist.
